It has been an extremely busy and successful past few weeks for our Premier sports teams. With just a few weeks of the winter season to go we have some exciting fixtures coming up.
1st XV Rugby
Two weeks ago, the 1st XV beat Tangaroa College 13-6 if front of a vocal crowd of Old Boys, students and family members. This was followed up on Saturday with a five try 35-7 win over Aorere College putting the school in a strong position to keep 1A status for 2023. With just the one home game to go against St Kentigern College at home this weekend there is potential for this to be one of the school’s more successful seasons in the 1A competition.
This weekend all four of the school’s teams have home games so it is a very good opportunity to come and support the school. Our Under 15 team remains unbeaten this year.
1st XI Football
The first XI has been in a battle to secure promotion to the A2 league against the likes of Orewa College and Lynfield College. The battle between these three teams for the two promotion spots has been fierce but spectacular. Liston College has gone on a 6 game winning streak to close the gap on the top two sides and managed to secure a 3 - 2 home win against Orewa College and a 4 - 3 away win against Lynfield College. These important wins have put Liston College in with a shot of securing promotion. Liston College currently trail Orewa College by two points with Lynfield College a further two points back. With just two rounds left, Liston College still has to play Botony Downs (away) with our final game against Kingsway School here at Liston College on the 20th August 2022 and we are hoping for a lot of support from the Liston College community to support the boys.
Special mention of Captain of Football, Bronson Sammut’s 21 goals so far this season and the Year 9 team leading their competition and Year 10’s in 4th place.
Premier Basketball
Recent weeks have seen some close games for our Premier Basketball team in the top Auckland wide grade. In front of an excellent crowd at St Dominic’s College the team took St Kentigern College close with outstanding performances from Dhon lao, Rasheed Tahiru and Kelvin Mensah. This was backed up with narrow losses to Sacred Heart College Mount Albert Grammar. The team continues to improve and make the school proud.
Wednesday saw our Junior Premier team play in the Central/West final against Auckland Grammar where …………………. Next week they take part in the greater Auckland Championships against the best teams in the region
