40 Liston College students competed at the 2023 AIMS Games in Tauranga.
This year the annual AIMS Games was held in the first week of September in sunny Tauranga. Liston sent over 40 students to represent the College in Rugby 7’s, Squash, Basketball, Football and Mountain Biking.
Our Football team won their last two games 9-0 and 5-0, a great result against more experienced teams. The Rugby 7’s team was a young group, made up mostly of Year 7 players. The team had mixed results but learnt and developed as the week went on.
Our Mountain Biking team consisted of five Year 8 boys who did all their training by themselves. They had to painstakingly wait until the end of the week to get their opportunity in a competitive field of over 200 participants. While the boys didn’t medal, they enjoyed the experience of competing against many others on a challenging course.
Benji Jefferies represented the College at Squash and came 2nd in New Zealand. He had some fantastic results leading into the final, narrowly missing out on 1st place. A fantastic tournament by this highly ranked young man. We look forward to watching his game continue to develop in the years to come.
Our Liston Intermediate Gold Basketball team went through pool play undefeated. The team played multiple games each day, perseverance was key. With a couple of close losses in the playoffs, the team finished 11th in New Zealand, the highest place finish for a Liston team at AIMS. Well done to this dedicated team.
A big thank you to Miss McQuaid, Mr Baker, Mr Miller, Mr Hughes and all the parent support to ensure these games were successful for our young men.
