Last Saturday the 1st XV traveled out to Chapel Road in Howick to take on Botany Downs College for a place in the 1A competition for 2020. Botany Downs had a lot of momentum after winning the 1B competition in 2019 and the general feeling within the rugby community was that they would be tough to beat.
The team had a slow start to the game going down 3-0 via a Botany Downs penalty. A back and forth tussle and high error count from Liston meant the teams went into the break at 3-3. Liston started the 2nd half with much more intent and purpose to their play. An increased level of physicality paid dividends with tries to Sete Falekaono and a brace from flanker Tai Pangai. Lani Siasau completed the scoring with one penalty and two conversions. Other notable performances came from James Finau and captain Keenan Tauta-Selu.
Botany Downs desperately tried to get back into the game with a late try but determined goal line defence from Liston sealed the win 22-11. Special thanks to all those within the Liston community that made the trip out east to support the boys. It is a privilege to be a part of the Auckland 1A competition and a wonderful opportunity for our young men.
The team begin the 1A competition this Saturday with a huge challenge against perennial powerhouse Sacred Heart at home. Kick off is at 2.30pm on the no. 1 field.
