How NCEA works at Liston College

Liston LEVEL 1

All Students will study SEVEN subjects.  English, Mathematics, Physical Education, and Religious Education are compulsory. Students choose THREE other subjects however, taking one of our three Science options is strongly recommended.

There are a mixture of Achievement Standard and Unit Standard courses available. Generally, students who choose a Unit Standards course are unable to move on to an Achievement Standard based course at a higher level in the following year.

It is important for students to maintain a well-balanced subject mix which ensures choice and flexibility in following years. Students should also choose options that suit their interests, and if they are not certain what a subject is about then they should approach their dean, the careers advisor or the relevant Head of Department to gather more information.

NCEA  LEVEL  2

There are a mixture of one year Achievement Standard and two year Unit Standard courses available at Level 2. Those students who have gained 15 or more credits in individual subjects, can progress to Level 2 in that particular subject only, subject to individual subject / HOD pre-requisites. Students studying at Level 2 will all study Religious Education at this level.  Students will also study subjects that they have met the pre-requisites in (up to FIVE other subjects) which may be at either Level 1 or Level 2 as appropriate.  To attain NCEA Level 2, Students must study ENGLISH or equivalent literacy-based subject.

In choosing a course for succeeding years students must be careful to see that subjects to be taken at Level 3 have their grounding in Level 2 (especially Mathematics, Sciences, Languages, Visual Arts and Accounting).

NCEA  LEVEL  3

There are only year-long Achievement Standard courses available at Level 3.

Those students who have gained 15 or more credits in individual subjects, can progress to Level 3 in that particular subject only, subject to individual subject / HOD pre-requisites.

Like Level 2, students studying at Level 3 will study Religious Education. They will also study those subjects that they have meet the pre-requisites in (up to FIVE other subjects) which may be at either Level 1, 2 or 3, as appropriate.
