Student Visa Information
Students who are coming to New Zealand to study full time for longer than three months must obtain a Student Visa.
A Student Visa is:
An endorsement students get in their passports. It shows the student has permission to travel to New Zealand to study. It will state the expiry date of the student’s visa and conditions of their visa. The conditions may include:
- the course of study
- the education institute
- the location of the institute in New Zealand
Agents are able to assist students with their visa applications before they depart their home country. The Director of International Students is able to assist students with their visa renewals.
Full details of visa and permit requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand while studying, and reporting requirements are available through the New Zealand Immigration Service, and can be viewed on their website at www.immigration.govt.nz
The New Zealand Government can revoke student visas if the student's attendance at school is inadequate. A student visa places an obligation on the student to whom it is issued to attend school for all classes.
Students intending to remain in New Zealand for more than six months but less than two years and are from a high risk tuberculosis country or have spent a total of three months in a high risk tuberculosis country in the last five years will require a chest X-ray examination. Students intending spending two years or more in New Zealand will need to undergo a full medical and X-ray examination.
